Nargis: Nargis was one of the greatest Indian actresses of all time. Her performances were authentic and natural to a degree not seen then in Indian Cinema, which could still be quite loud and theatrical.

Daughter of actress, singer and filmmaker Jaddanbai, she was born Fatima Rashid in Allahabad. When she was just 5 years old, her mother introduced her as a child star, Baby Rani. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest actresses in the history of Hindi cinema. During a career that spanned from the 1940s to the 60s, Nargis appeared in numerous commercially successful as well as critically appreciated films, many of which have achieved classic and cult status.

Birthday: 1st June, 1929 in Calcutta.

Date of Death: 3rd May, 1981 in Mumbai.

Spouse: Sunil Dutt (1958 – 1981) (her death).

Debut Film: Talashe Haq (1935) as a child artiste. Taqdeer (1943) was her debut as an *****.

Major Impact: Andaz (1949).

Successful Films: Humayun (1945), Mehndi (1947), Mela (1948), Anokha Pyar (1948), Barsaat (1949), Mela (1948), Andaz (1949), Jogan (1950), Babul (1950), Deedar (1951), Bewafaa (1952), Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Chori Chori (1956), Jagte Raho (1956), Mother India (1957), Raat Aur Din (1967).

Awards: Winner of the Filmfare Best Actress Award for Mother India (1957) and also of a National Film Award for Raat Aur Din (1968).

Facts we didn’t know:

Granddaughter of Motilal Nehru and Daleepabai.

The Indian actress Nargis made her only appearance in a Greek film in Tosa Oneira Stous Dromous (1968). Her movies were popular in Greece.

Formed one of the most popular Hindi on-screen couples with Raj Kapoor. Off-screen, she was deeply in love with the already married Raj Kapoor.

Nargis was the first actor to be honored with the Padma Shri Award; she was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha (Indian Parliament) for her charitable work for spastics.

Sister of Anwar Hussain and Akhtar Hussain.

In movies, she often played the role of women caught in a dilemma of the heart leading to a tragic ending.
